2014 to 2022: eight hard years, then the reunion that changed everything

Between the first car actually built and the birth of a manufacturer there are sometimes eight years that nobody ever tells the story of.

2014, a first project

Bruno Laffite's industrial adventure did not begin with a hypercar. It began in 2014 with a large 4x4 project, ambitious and expensive, run out of the south of France. He managed to build the first car, which anyone familiar with the industry will recognise as a rare outcome in itself. Getting from an intention to a running vehicle means suppliers, engineering offices, tooling, testing, a chain of decisions and cash that keeps pace with all of it.

So the first car existed. It proved the enterprise was not a whim. But in the motor industry, building one example and building a company are two different trades, and the second begins exactly where the first ends. The gesture then has to be repeated, made reliable, certified, financed and sold, and not one of those stages resembles the one before it.

Eight difficult years

What followed were eight years Bruno Laffite makes no attempt to dress up. Funding is negotiated and then falls apart, timelines slip, partners change their minds, homologation imposes its own calendar. An independent car project lives in a permanent state of exposure: you have to convince people before you have proof, and the proof costs precisely what you do not yet have.

To the technical and financial strain add the hardest part, which is solitude. An isolated founder carries everything: the vision, the pitch, the money, the doubt. There is nobody to delegate the worry to. Eight years, measured in lived time, is not a decorative wilderness: it is close to a decade of telling yourself every morning to carry on, with no certainty that anyone will follow.

Holding on is not heroic: it is simply refusing, day after day, the reasonable version of the story.

A reunion that changes everything

The reversal came about four years ago, in 2022. Bruno Laffite got back in touch with Pascal Cohen, a friend he had met decades earlier at l'École des cadres in La Défense, Paris, where Pascal was two years ahead of him. The two had lost sight of each other the way people do after graduation, with no falling out, simply through diverging paths.

Pascal Cohen, by then based in the United States, offered him a job. Bruno Laffite answered that he was in the process of becoming a car manufacturer. The conversation could have ended there, on a polite misunderstanding. It did the opposite: Pascal did not read the answer as an excuse, he took it seriously. The two friends became partners and founded Laffite Automobili together.

What a partner changes in a story like this cannot be measured in capital alone. He changes the nature of the problem. Two people can split the fronts, contradict each other usefully, hold each other's morale and present the outside world with a structure rather than a lone individual. The company settled in Turin, at the heart of Italy's industrial and design basin, and the project stopped being a personal conviction and became a marque.

There is a symmetry in that reunion which Bruno Laffite readily points out: the business school where the two men crossed paths as young men leads, thirty years later, to an industrial company neither of them had imagined. The loop closed, and the eight years before it stopped being wasted.
