Business school at La Défense: the meeting outlasted the degree

After his baccalauréat, Bruno Laffite enrolled at l'École des cadres in La Défense. He would take little from it beyond the one thing that mattered: a third-year student passed in the corridors, Pascal Cohen, who three decades later would become his partner in Monaco.

La Défense, the setting of a promise

The setting matters. L'École des cadres occupied a corner of La Défense, the business district planted west of Paris like a promise: towers, concrete esplanades, executives in a hurry, and students convinced they would soon look like them. Management accounting and marketing were on the syllabus. What was really taught there was how to move through a world.

Bruno Laffite arrived with one peculiarity: he had no intention of building a career in it. Racing already held most of his attention, and he spent more energy hunting for budgets than preparing for exams. He makes no secret of it now, the qualification counted for very little in what followed. What he owes those years fits entirely into one person.

Two years apart

Inside a school, two years of seniority form a near watertight border. First years and third years share no classes, no circles, and meet only in the common spaces. Pascal Cohen belonged to that category of elders you observe rather more than you socialise with.

They spoke nonetheless, then took to each other, with the particular ease of student friendships that rest on no interest at all. Then life did what life does: the diplomas, the jobs, the continents. Bruno Laffite built leisure karting circuits in Paris and Dijon and ran them for ten years, left for Florida to build and renovate houses, and eventually came back towards southern Europe. Contact was lost, with no falling out and no particular reason.

The slow work of decisive encounters

In 2022, the two men found each other again. The idea of a race car homologated for the road had by then existed for eight years: a project launched in 2014 around a large four-wheel-drive machine, a first car actually built, then eight hard years in which the venture refused to move. Something was missing, and that something was neither technical nor entirely financial.

What was missing was a partner. An industrial company is not founded on a good idea, it is founded on two people able to cross together the stretches where the idea is worth nothing. Pascal Cohen brought what Bruno Laffite did not have, and the reverse holds just as well. Laffite Automobili was born of that complementarity before it was ever born of a business plan.

The story says something distinctly uncommercial about how careers are actually assembled. Decisive encounters do not announce themselves at the moment they occur. They look like inconsequential conversations in a school corridor, and it can take thirty years, a hypercar of more than a thousand horsepower and a Monaco address to measure what was set in motion.

A practical lesson survives, one that rarely appears in prospectuses. The content of a course may well matter less than the human network it puts into circulation. Not out of cynicism, but because a school gathers under one roof, for three years, people who would otherwise never have met. The rest belongs to time.
