Orlando, Florida: rebuilding a professional life one house at a time

Orlando is no capital of motor racing. That may have been exactly what Bruno Laffite needed at the moment he packed his bags for Florida.

Changing continents

The turning point came around the birth of his daughters, who are twenty-one today. Ten years of running karting circuits in Paris and Dijon had just come to an end, and nothing much was holding him in France. He chose Florida, settled in Orlando and moved into a trade with no connection whatsoever to the paddock: building and renovating houses. Motor racing left the frame, and it stayed out of it for a long time.

The move went deeper than a change of address. In France the surname arrives before the man: Laffite means Jacques, a hundred and seventy-seven Grands Prix, six wins, the blue Ligier. In Florida the name means nothing to anyone. You introduce yourself, you convince, you land a first job and then a second, you build a reputation from zero in a language that is not your own. Most people dread that blank page. It suited him.

Learning a trade

Building and renovating is knowledge acquired on site, from tradesmen, inspectors and suppliers, and from a building code you discover by colliding with it. Florida brings its own constraints: hurricane standards, humidity, timber framing, projects measured in weeks and clients who talk about money without preamble. Nothing romantic in any of it, and a great deal of method. He learned it the only way that trade is learned, by getting one estimate wrong and paying for it.

The work in fact resembles preparing a car far more than racing one. Sequences, trades following each other in a non negotiable order, a schedule that alone decides the final margin. A slab poured too early or a permit granted too late costs more than a mistake behind the wheel. Bruno Laffite ran that business until around the age of forty-five, which makes it, in sheer duration, one of the longest chapters of his working life.

A building site forgives no more than a lap does: whatever was badly prepared always shows up in the end.

What America teaches about risk

Then there is the lesson America hands out and France transmits badly: failure there is information, not a verdict. You launch, you correct, you launch again. Credit reopens, partners come back, the project on the table weighs more than the personal record behind it. An entrepreneur learns to size a risk rather than avoid it, which is not the same job at all.

That culture shapes people differently. It teaches you to commit before every guarantee is in place, and to treat an outsized project not as pretension but as a working hypothesis to be tested. Without those Florida years, it is hard to imagine a former Formula 3 driver ever granting himself permission to found a car manufacturer and aim at a road-legal machine of more than a thousand horsepower.

And then there were the daughters. A man raising two small children abroad stops thinking in racing seasons: he thinks in school years, in stability, in roots to be put down. Competition receded, not through renunciation, but because something else came first. The old idea, a race car homologated for the road, did not vanish for all that. It waited. It would resurface a decade later, on another coast, a few kilometres from Monaco.
